Located on the horn of Africa, Somali food is a melting pot of cultural influence, and gathers flavors from East Africa, the Middle East, India – even as far as Italy!

Join the Somerville Arts Council and Nibble as we experience the fusion of flavors with Somali-born Somerville Resident Nimco Muhammad-Hassan. Although she’s traveled the world, Somali food is her ultimate comfort cuisine – and in this case, comfort is all in the condiments. Nimco will wow us with a demonstration of preparing smoked yogurt (using hot charcoals) for the dressing for an eggplant Salad Lel Swit (Black Salad), and together, we will prepare Maraq cad iyo bariis, a traditional Somali meal consisting of a satisfying winter chicken stew and toasted rice, topped with a beautiful array of with fresh herbs, veggies and prepared salads and accoutrements. The real show stopper? The chutneys! We will prepare two different Somali sauces, bursting with international flavor.

If you have long hair, please bring a hair tie or hat. Everyone is encouraged to bring their appetite!
