Henri Matisse inhabited a rich cultural landscape in Paris of the early 20th century – painters met and mingled with composers, sculptors, writers, and philosophers who frequently collaborated on innovative projects that redefined the artistic experience on the gallery wall, in the concert hall, and on the stage. This session illuminates that cultural milieu through the musical innovations happening in Paris, especially those of the operatic stage, by composers such as Satie, Ravel, Debussy, and Poulenc, as well as Matisse’s own relationship to music, reflected in works such as “The Music Lesson,” his collaboration with composer Igor Stravinsky, and the iconic, euphoric painting, “Dance.” James Myers, coach/pianist, and artists from Boston Lyric Opera explore the nexus of music and art in Matisse’s world.
