Krystle Brown's project Slán Abhaile / Safe Home (Irish; pronounced slawn a-ball-ya), will be a community-focused, memory-driven bench at the Doherty-Gibson Playground. Krystle is inviting the Fields Corner and the surrounding community to come together and share how the housing crisis has impacted them. Whether you have been a long-time resident or recently moved to the area, everyone is invited to come together to share their story.
The bench will be a repository where neighborhood collective memory of home is stored through photography and oral storytelling.
Fields Corner and Dorchester residents are invited to bring photos of what they define as home– whether it's their favorite neighborhood spot, their house, or family/friends that make them feel at home– and/or to bring in small objects that represent home and that they would like to be photographed for the project.
Objects and belongings are important representations of home; sometimes that is all we have left of spaces we shared with family and friends. Krystle understands this as a person who came from economic instability. Their mother, Kathleen Bowen, grew up in Fields Corner and experienced housing insecurity throughout her life in the 1950s-1970s.
