Where there is darkness, light, is Sheffield’s annual voyage into the remarkable world of Beethoven and Shostakovich quartets. As is often the case with these two giants, there is tremendous contrast and a delicate balance between light and dark. This year’s pairing presents two works, each stemming from the composers’ late periods: Shostakovich’s heart wrenching Quartet No. 11 and Beethoven’s extraordinary String Quartet No. 12. This year, a third voice joins the conversation, with Ukrainian composer Vasyl Barvinsky's beautiful Prayer for string quartet.
A rising group on the regional classical music scene, Sheffield Chamber Players was founded in 2014 on the belief that experiencing chamber music in the intimate settings for which it was written profoundly changes the way listeners respond to music, and to each other. In close proximity to musicians, one can hear the expressive subtleties of a performance with unprecedented clarity. Sheffield’s musical experiences are enhanced by giving audiences details about composers’ backgrounds, and stories behind the music.
