Film critic Scott Tobias leads this virtual seminar on Sergio Leone's epic western.
In the dying days of the Old West, a struggle to control water in a dusty desert town embroils three hard-bitten gunmen in an epic clash of greed, honor and revenge. Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Charles Bronson, and Claudia Cardinale star in Sergio Leone's monumental masterpiece, which ranks among his most admired achievements and the greatest Westerns ever made.
Scott Tobias is a film and television writer. After freelancing for The A.V. Club during graduate school at University of Miami, he was brought up to Chicago in 1999 for a full-time writing position. (First press screening: Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.) He stayed at The A.V. Club for 16 years, 10 of them as Film Editor. In 2013, he and other longtime staffers left to found The Dissolve for Pitchfork Media, a site that lasted only two years, but left a beautiful corpse. For the last five years, he has turning to freelancing full time, with reviews and features in publications like The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Ringer, Vulture, Guardian, Rolling Stone and other fine outlets. He is also the editor-in-chief of Oscilloscope’s Musings, a page dedicated to publishing retrospective essays by esteemed film critics.
