Tuesday, August 1, 5:30 p.m. reception, 6:00 lecture
Otis House, 141 Cambridge Street, Boston, Mass.
Early photography had a magical quality, even for those who understood the science behind it. For many in the nineteenth century, the relationship between science and the supernatural was unclear. Sympathetic photographers and charlatans set up a brisk business "securing the shadow," memorializing deceased loved ones or producing images purported to be from beyond the grave. Join Historic New England Regional Site Manager Bethany Groff Dorau for an illustrated exploration of Victorian photography from the moment of death and beyond.
This is the first lecture in our annual Twilight Talks series, a partnership with the Victorian Society of America/New England chapter and Historic New England.
