Are humans evolved to run? Why (and how much) is exercise good for our health?
Monday, December 10th, 6:30-8:00pm at the Burren
(247 Elm St, Somerville, MA 02144)
The Lieberman lab studies how and why the human body is the way it is, focusing on the musculoskeletal system. We are especially interested in how evolutionary approaches to studying the human body can help better prevent and treat musculoskeletal diseases. To address these problems, we integrate experimental biomechanics and physiology in both the laboratory and the field with analyses of the human fossil record. Although we study every part of the body from feet to heads and many physical activities from walking to throwing, many of the lab projects are on the evolution and biology of running. Research from our lab has shown that humans evolved to run and that an evolutionary approach to running (including barefoot running) can help people runner better and possibly avoid injury.
