The Kentucky Derby provides the most exciting two minutes in sports and The Sandra K. Russell Derby Day Benefit for Mito is the most exciting Kentucky Derby party in New England, all to raise funds to support families impacted by mitochondrial disease.
Set for Saturday, May 5, 2018 starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Royale, this MitoAction benefit includes Derby-inspired cocktails and food, a ladies’ hat contest, a men's bow tie contest, amazing auction prizes, entertainment by a DJ, a photo booth, and a live broadcast of the race.
“MitoAction’s Derby Day Benefit is a night of fun that allows the community to come together to make a difference in the lives of families faced with the challenges of this rare disease,” said Kira Mann, Chief Executive Officer of MitoAction.
This high-energy fundraiser supports all of the programs and resources that MitoAction offers free of charge to the mitochondrial disease community, including sending diagnosed children to summer camp.
Mitochondrial disease is a rare, chronic genetic disease that can be present at birth or develop later in life. Targeting the energy producing body systems, mitochondrial disease causes debilitating physical, developmental, and cognitive disabilities. Symptoms may include: poor growth, loss of muscle coordination, muscle weakness and pain, seizures, vision and/or hearing loss, gastrointestinal issues, learning disabilities, and heart, liver, or kidney failure. Approximately 1 in 4,000 people lives with mitochondrial disease, which is progressive and has no cure.
The Derby Day Benefit was created in honor of a woman who knew the importance of helping others and who loved to celebrate the Kentucky Derby. Sandra K. Russell and her husband, MitoAction board member Gordon Russell, hosted an annual Kentucky Derby party in their home in Wellesley, MA, before she lost her battle with mitochondrial disease. MitoAction wanted to ensure that Sandra's legacy of giving continued and that families knew they would never be alone on this journey.
“Please join us as we help improve the quality of life for our patients and their families,” Mann said.
