What happens when our emotions are sold to us? The Salt of The Earth, a new video work by Vivian Charlesworth, is set in the artificial universe of a beverage company, which does exactly that. This video piece explores the inner workings of The Salt of the EarthTM Company, a business that harvests tears from individuals, bottles the liquid, and then resells it as luxury bottled water.
Inspired by the companies that sponsor social media influencers to promote weight loss teas, gummy bear vitamins, and other “health” products, this project focuses on the individuals who are cogs in the corporate structure. Throughout the piece, the viewer sees the production of the beverage, from the extraction process, to the bottling and packaging, as well as an investment meeting with the CEO, all of which beg the question: "are they worth their salt?"
