Our Salon Series offers unusual chamber music selections in unexpected venues in and around Newton. On tap at the Salon this week: Mozart and Bruckner!
Mozart - String Quintet No.5 in D Major, K. 593
Larghetto-Allegro
Adagio
Menuetto
Allegro
One of the last and greatest of Mozart's chamber compositions, the D Major quintet was composed at the end of 1790, one year before his death. Written in between the operas Cosi fan Tutte and The Magic Flute, the D major quintet shares their pathos, good humor, and beauty.
Bruckner - String Quintet, WAB 112
Adagio
90 years later in 1879, Anton Bruckner, a great admirer of Mozart's music, turned to the genre which Mozart made so much his own, and produced one of his few chamber works. In this work, the harmonic daring and searing intensity of Bruckner's symphonies are presented in a uniquely intimate way. We will perform the quintet's beautiful slow movement.
