Inspired in part by the heroism, resistance, and resilience of abolitionist Lewis Hayden as well as the powerful stories to be found on Boston’s Black Heritage Trail, #RESISTANCE #RESILIENCE is about empowerment during tough times.

Featured works include the iconic civil rights anthems “Ain’t Gonna’ Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round” and “We Shall
Overcome,” the latter of which includes audience participation. Music by Castle of our Skins Composer-in-Residence Anthony Green will be featured with his solo saxophone world premiere entitled “dhakira: a middle eastern impression.”

Solo performances by percussionist Julian Loida and flutist Orlando Cela will include Johann Sebastian Bach’s well-known “Chaconne” and African American composer Ed Bland’s “For Flute.” Filmmaker Ireashia Monét will showcase works depicting strength and heritage in her “Reimagining Blackness and Ancestry” and “Resist” videos, while traditional Venezuelan songs, Afro-Latin drumming, and spoken word artistry fill the evening with celebration of cross-cultural resilience.
