Each session will be self-contained, devoted to one or more Italian ballroom dances from around 1600, as described in treatises of the period. Steps are in a “natural” (not turned out) position. Movement quality varies: steps can be smooth or sharp, calm or vigorous. Some dances, like galliards, include lots of jumps; others are closer to the ground. No prior Renaissance dance experience is required — steps needed for the dances will be taught as part of the workshop.
The repertory:
Feb. 25
Alba Novella, choreography by Fabritio Caroso, and galliard variations from various sources
The first dance in Caroso's first treatise, Il Ballarino (1581), is the pleasing couple dance Alba Novella. Most of the dance is in duple meter, but it also includes a somewhat livelier saltarello section at the close. In addition to this choreographed dance, we'll spend some time on basic galliard steps and step sequences.
Mar. 25
Leggiadra Marina, choreography by Cesare Negri
This multi-part couple dance from Negri's treatise Le Gratie d'Amore (1602) alternates among duple meter, galliard, and saltarello music, giving this easy-to-learn dance a satisfying sense of vigor.
