After an act of violence, how can storytelling make meaning from tragedy? What is the role of artists in giving voice to survivors and igniting conversation? We look to the ancient Roman story of Lucretia—a tale of the cruel sexual violation of one woman, her response, and the ensuing political upheaval that reverberated throughout an entire society.
Join us for this unique event as we deeply explore one aspect of Lucretia’s tale, which has been told and retold through centuries—artistic depictions of the work’s central act of devastating brutality and its resonance in the conversation about sexual violence today. Artists share performances of opera, Shakespeare and poetry, and the words of contemporary survivors.
After the performance, engage with the artists in an informal Talkback and continue the conversation during a reception with light appetizers and cash bar.
