On September 8, 2022, THE GRIFFIN MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY will present Rachel Portesi: Standing Still, a solo exhibition of works by artist Rachel Portesi, featuring a selection of collodion tintypes, taken on vintage large-format cameras, exploring the evolving lifelong complexities of female identity. A selection of 8 x 10 polaroids will also be on display as well as 3D viewmasters with video footage of her meticulous process.
The works in Standing Still are part of the artist's ongoing series of “hair portraits”, which combine long exposure analog photography with elaborate staged tresses of hair, constructed with models in her studio. The result is a series of whimsical portraits that examine the nuanced transitions related to motherhood, aging, and choice, as well as the intersection of identity and femininity with the physical world.
An Artist Reception will take place at the museum on September 10, 2022 from 4-6pm as well as an Artist Portrait Studio on September 11, 2022 from 1-4pm on the Griffin Terrace. An additional Online Artist Talk will take place on September 22, 2022 at 7pm.
