Porter Square Books is thrilled to welcome Shanta Lee, author of Black Metamorphoses, and U-Meleni Mhlaba-Adebo, author of Soul Psalms, for a multimedia performance of their poetry! This event will take place on Thursday, April 20 at 7pm at PSB: Boston Edition (50 Liberty Dr. Boston, MA 02210).
Black Metamorphoses is best described as piercing a 2000+ year-old veil connecting directly to Ovid’s Metamorphoses in both a conversation and an interrogation. Pulling from a range of myths, this manuscript rises above direct conversion of the work into the Black experience through inversion, bending, and taking brazen chances. What happens when the myth of Narcissus is revisited within the context of imperialism? How is a Ghanaian myth used to explore the power dynamic between the Black female body and colonialism? What happens when a whole group is stricken with a hunger that, when satiated, remains unquenchable while causing an unnamable, unquantifiable damage? What happens when colonialism, imperialism, and white supremacy are internalized or become the backdrop against one’s ancestral and current lived experience?
