Playdate2: Storytime! with Live Music! combines the most beloved elements of live storytelling with live contemporary music, much of it newly commissioned for this program. Families with children are especially welcome – all are invited!
The performance features the dynamic Doria Hughes as storyteller, collaborating with composers Lisa Neher and Ian Wiese. Lisa’s music underscores the classic story of Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Brave in a contemporary flair, revealing their self-actualizing, capable selves. Ian has set music to The Selkie Child, a Scottish myth featuring a furred seal that has shed their skin, become human in the process, and interacted with people along the shores of neighboring islands. Also included is the vibrant and cutting music of Dwight Banks, to which Doria will narrate another story.
Musical performers include our beloved Dino Annex musicians Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin (flutes) and Anne Black (viola), with guest Charles Overton (harp).
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Cambridge Arts Council and the Boston Cultural Council, local agencies which are supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
