Have you ever asked yourself any of the following questions:
“What is holding me back?”
“Am I living the life that I was meant to live?”
“Who am I… really?”
In Plato’s Myth of the Cave, he describes a scene where the cave’s inhabitants are chained, facing a wall. They mistake the shadows and echoes coming from the wall as the real thing. As long as they are chained in place, they live in a pseudo-reality, thinking they are free when, in fact, they are prisoners deceived by their own delusions.
When we call into question our preconceived notions of reality, we open a door to possibilities undreamed of by the worldly consensus of things. If you are interested in finding out what you are truly capable of as a human being, philosophy may offer a way.
Rather than comparing ourselves to others, or listening to the programmed voices inside our head that tell us what we “ought” to do, or seeking validation outside ourselves, philosophy teaches us to look inside. Here we discover the true meaning of freedom. Here we will encounter the true self. And here, we find what endures while everything else just fades away.
Come and share your thoughts on how we can begin to unshackle the chains which hold us back.
