Join us on Friday, October 20 at 6:30 PM for the Boston book launch of the new novel, THE RIVER, THE TOWN, by Farah Ali, in conversation with JP author Shubha Sunder, author of the story collection BOOMTOWN GIRL!
THE RIVER, THE TOWN is a work of literary climate fiction set in Pakistan, an intimate family drama between a mother, her son and the woman he loves, who are caught up in the throes of climate disaster. Told in rotating perspectives from 1966 to 1998, the novel follows their search for stability, love, and belonging. In the words of Jakob Guanzon, author of Abandon: "In prose as austere as her characters are complex, Ali unearths a tale at once timeless yet viscerally entrenched in the rural and urban realities of Pakistan.”
BOOMTOWN GIRL is a debut collection of short stories that explore the ambitions, delusions and struggles of people in Bangalore, India in the 1990s. The stories trace the city's warp-speed transformation from a leafy backwater into India's Silicon Valley: a place where Digital Age values clash with tradition, where British colonialism casts its strong shadow, and where visions are inspired and distorted by the forces of globalization. This collection won the St. Lawrence Book Award in 2021.
Farah Ali and Shubha Sunder will talk about their books, how history shapes the present, and what fires their imaginations to write. Join us for an evening of invigorating conversation!
Free and open to all! Limited seating.
