In 1753, a Miss Maria Macklin performed in London, singing and accompanying herself on a new type of instrument: a wire-strung cittern, built by the German luthier John Frederick Hintz. Miss Macklin’s performance set off such a vogue for this instrument (which later became known as the “English guitar”) that composers were publishing solos, songs, and chamber music for it for the next 50 years. Many of the best composers in London, including Johann Christian Bach, Frederic Schuman, Giovanni Battista Marella, and Anne Ford, wrote fantasies, sonatas, dances, and character music for the instrument. Rudolph Straube, Baroque lute player from Leipzig, also composed some of the finest music for the English guitar.
OLAV CHRIS HENRIKSEN, acclaimed throughout Europe and North America as a soloist on lute, theorbo, and early guitars, has performed and recorded with the Boston Camerata, Handel & Haydn Society, Waverly Consort, Boston Baroque, Emmanuel Music, Ensemble Chaconne, and Musicians of the Old Post Road, among others. He performs and lectures frequently at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, playing musical instruments from the Museum’s collection.
