On Saturday, May 3, the Needham Bank Great Hall Concert Series will bring the Orion Chamber Ensemble to the Needham stage—including cellist Ronald Lowry, pianist Randall Hodgkinson, violinist Peter Zazofsky, guest artist and violinist Irina Muresanu, and guest artist and violist Noriko Futagami.
The five are preparing a program that will delight long-time chamber music fans and those who want to explore this genre. It will be anchored by two favorite
pieces—Beethoven’s invigorating Trio in D Major, Op. 70, No. 1 for Piano, Violin, and Cello, which is known for its mysterious “Ghost” movement, and Dvorak’s Quintet, Op. 81 in A Major for Strings and Piano, a “hit parade” of beautiful melodies infused with Czech folk rhythms.
Ronald Lowry is principal cellist of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Boston Ballet Orchestra and artistic director of the Needham Concert Society. He performs frequently with the Boston Symphony.
Randall Hodgkinson is an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society and a faculty member of the New England Conservatory, Wellesley College, and Longy School of Music of Bard College.
Peter Zazofsky has appeared as a soloist with many great orchestras around the world. He is a faculty member at Boston University and also teaches at New England Conservatory Preparatory School.
Romanian violinist Irina Muresanu is known for her elegant and passionate performances. She plays an 1849 Giuseppe Rocca violin with an Etienne Pajeot bow.
Noriko Futagami is principal violist for Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and section violist with Rhode Island Philharmonic and Portland Symphony Orchestra, and a faculty member at Brown University. She also performs with the Radius Ensemble, Boston Musica Viva, Cantata Singers, and Winsor Music, among others.
