Boston Sculptors Gallery presents the opening reception of Strata, by Julia Shepley & Bump and Swag by Marilu Swett
New work by Julia Shepley, Strata, and Marilu Swett, Bump and Swag, are on view at Boston Sculptors Gallery May 8 -June 9.
Strata, Julia Shepley’s exhibition of new work, will be on view at Boston Sculptors Gallery May 8 to June 9, 2019. Featuring dimensional prints, cast paper reliefs and bamboo structures that are stitched, layered and collaged, Strata highlights Shepley’s trademark process: the stratification of material, imagery and mark-making to give the illusion of depth and transience. Referencing architectural structures, natural environments, and paths of motion, Shepley’s work conveys the lasting physical and emotional imprint of spaces left behind on our movements, habits and longings.
In her exhibition Bump and Swag, Marilu Swett’s new work reflects recent stresses in the natural and cultural realms. Biological entities have physical reactions to stress. People think about hitting the road.
Walking the wooded hills of New England and observing the flora have long influenced Swett’s artwork. Last summer she had the opportunity to work in rural Minnesota. The heavily worked agricultural landscape, contemporary farming practices, and old and new farm equipment evoked new imagery for the artist. Proximity to freight trains continuously hauling goods provoked curiosity about train travel. Recent ongoing political news made those thoughts of travel appealing. These themes are embedded in the work featured in Bump and Swag.
