Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), a member of King's Chapel for most of his life, is best known as the author of the poem "Old Ironsides" or perhaps as the titular "Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table." Despite the physician-turned-poet being one of the most popular figures in American literature in his day, a substantial number of his poems share his personal associations with friends like James Russell Lowell and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Join literary historian Rob Velella for an exploration of these poems of friendship in this virtual event.
Rob Velella is an independent literary historian, occasional tour guide, and sometime playwright focusing on American writing of the 19th century. His work includes a fully annotated edition of James Russell Lowell's 1848 satire "A Fable for Critics" as well as articles and chapters on Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, and Walt Whitman, among others.
Tickets are pay what you can with a suggested donation of $5.
