At the corner of Washington and Lagrange streets once lay Boston’s city-sanctioned Adult Entertainment District. A red-light district designed to contain Boston’s lust for booze, voyeurism, and sex, the Combat Zone swarmed with characters and stories. Murderous pimps, gangland activity, and pickpocketing prostitutes took over the streets of downtown Boston each night, hanging out at dirty book stores, live XXX shows, or Good Time Charlie’s. The city’s once-thriving theater district had become an attraction for sleaze and porno. Comedians, legitimate burlesque, live theater, and dance slowly degenerated over time to yield some of Boston’s sauciest stories and raunchiest characters. Today, it’s perfectly safe to walk through, and we can show you what remains of the legendary Combat Zone in comfort.
