Visit Nora Valdez’s new solo exhibition, FRAGMENTS, at Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College from Sept. 20th through Nov. 20th with the Artists’ Reception & Talk on Sunday, October 17th from 2-5pm.
Nora Valdez creates sculpture and public art exploring the idea of home and the immigrant experience. Her themes come from a personal place: immigrants who are navigating this same mighty river, moving from place to place, longing for home, and the shared feeling and yearning for a new place to rest and be safe. Now that we are all living in times of increasing change and disruption, that feeling of being dislocated and fragmented might be felt by not just immigrants, as the feeling of disruption and dislocation can have many sources.
For Valdez, carving gives her the opportunity to hear and express answers from deep within. It directs her slowly towards peace and back home to her essential self, one that is not fragmented or stuck between worlds.
Valdez is an award-winning international artist working and exhibiting since 1977. Born and raised in Argentina, her work has been exhibited in Europe, Asia, North, Central and South America, including numerous international Sculpture Symposiums. Valdez has over 15 permanent Public Art pieces sited around the world, and is the recipient of many awards, as well as national and international funding. She teaches at the Carving Center & Sculpture Studio in W. Rutland, Vermont and currently resides in Somerville's Davis Square neighborhood.
