For many of us, stories – and particular ways of telling them – are our first entryways to understanding the histories, identities, and worlds around us. If we change the telling, what other portals open up? How can we play with narrative to help us reach the stories that make us feel connected and true to ourselves? How can we use writing to preserve the stories that are closest to us? Grounded in the belief that writing can be a tool for self-expression, clarity, and community, this workshop invites participants to delve into “old” stories while inhabiting them as new narrators.

It's inspired by a new vision of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical comedy, COMPANY, which is coming to Boston this April. Traditionally, COMPANY tells the story of 35-year-old white male Bobby and his group of friends - all in traditional heterosexual relationships. Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott has upended the narrative by centering a BIPOC woman as Bobbie, surrounded by friends in all different types and exploring why being single, being married, and being alive is better with COMPANY. Together, we will practice how we can refashion familiar narratives through experimentation, trust, and the craft lessons of genre. Each week, participants will read flash fiction, memoir excerpts, love poems, myths, and letters, to ground ourselves in literary tradition while playfully expanding what we already know about telling stories.

Participants are encouraged to attend all 4 sessions of this workshop.

To register, please email librarian Nic Scoppettuolo at [email protected] or call 617-522-1960.

This program is presented in partnership with Writers Without Margins and Broadway in Boston.
