Brian Skerry saw his first shark in the wild in 1982 and was captivated. Over the last three and a half decades, Skerry, a National Geographic photographer and the New England Aquarium’s Explorer-in-Residence, has spent countless hours underwater in locations worldwide, photographing these enigmatic animals. In this lecture, “Sharks – From Shadow to Light,” Skerry will share his personal journey with sharks from the ways they inspire him to his approach with photography. Last year, National Geographic published Skerry’s stories about sharks in three consecutive monthly issues: June (Tiger Sharks), July (Great White Sharks) and August (Oceanic Whitetip Sharks.) In July 2017, the fourth in this series, Shortfin Mako Sharks, will be published.

Brian Skerry is the New England Aquarium’s Explorer-in-Residence and a photojournalist specializing in marine wildlife and underwater environments. Since 1998, he has been a contract National Geographic photographer who has traveled worldwide to cover a number of issues that endanger oceans and marine life. He has been all over the world to photograph endangered tropical coral reefs to diving beneath polar ice. While on assignment, he has lived at the bottom of the sea, spent months aboard fishing boats and traveled in everything from snowmobiles to canoes to the Goodyear Blimp. He has spent more than 10,000 hours underwater during his expansive career in which he has covered the planet’s last remaining pristine coral reefs, the plight of the right whale, marine reserves, sea turtles, squid, harp seals and their struggle to survive in frozen waters to the alarming decrease in the world’s fisheries to dolphin intelligence.
