The Brookline Arts Center is pleased to present Here by Narrae Kang, on view February 7-March 6, 2020. Join us for the reception Friday, February 7 from 6:00-8:00PM!
Narrae Kang moved from South Korea to the United States in 2017, which she describes as a life-changing decision. It brought the artist to many challenges in locating and adapting herself to a different cultural and social environment. As opposed to obsessing about becoming a member of the new society, Kang spent most of her time at her space alone, feeling secure, and that is how the artist started to appreciate her daily routine and considered archiving surroundings as the subject matter of her work.
Here is a series of archival drawing projects of the Brookline Arts Center by artist Narrae Kang. It refers not only to the location and the time that she spent at the BAC, but also the clues of her real existence. Through the show, she shares how an immigrant woman artist appreciates the beauty of mundanity while taking so much care with her labor and effort. Specifically for the exhibition, she found subtle site-specific things and moved them into art pieces with her glassworks and drawings. By transcribing on the surface of glass with a mark-making method, she tries to reinvent how we feel the beauty in our daily lives and raises questions about the life of an immigrant woman artist.
