Growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa, Naledi Masilo cultivated her love for music through backyard jam sessions and endless artistic curiosity. Rooted in her exploration of the jazz tradition and the influences of her African heritage, Naledi seeks to grow herself and her music to reflect the world that she sees and exists in. She believes that music has been gifted to the world as a tool to move lives and urge hearts to take action.
A recent graduate of the New England Conservatory, Naledi is making her mark on the local and regional jazz scene with her own music and as an in-demand collaborator, recently earning rave reviews on tour with Boston jazz veteran Bill Lowe’s Signifyin’ Natives project. She’s the founder of the South Africa based Dreaming Girls Foundation, a teaching artist at Boston City Singers, and also plays a leading role in Dreaming Zenzile, Somi Kakoma’s play based on the life of Miriam Makeba set to make its Off-Broadway premiere at the New York Theatre Workshop in the spring.
For this Dot Jazz Series appearance, Naledi will be accompanied by Kevin Harris on keyboard and Shahar Amdor on saxophone and flute.
