As part of its "Museum Current" lecture series, which focuses on recent scholarship, discoveries, and trends in Museum Studies, the McMullen Museum invites renegade group Museum Hack to discuss twenty-first-century strategies for engaging and attracting broader museum audiences with unique, high-energy, interactive tours and the use of social media and digital marketing initiatives.
Recognizing a dip in museum attendance by the millennial generation, founder Nick Gray launched Museum Hack in 2013 as a series of non-traditional, highly interactive, private “un-highlights” tours through the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Four years later, Museum Hack continues its tours at the Met, while adding tours at the American Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art, and the de Young Fine Arts Museum.
Museum Hack also works with museums around the world to develop programs that engage and retain new audiences and donors. By approaching collections with a well-researched, fact based “reverent irreverence” to reveal the amazing stories in museums, and by fighting “museum fatigue” through storytelling, photo challenges, and engaging activities, Museum Hack offers compelling strategies for a new generation of visitor-centered museums.
