We'll be hiking to the rocky summit of Mount Cardigan which offers amazing 360 degree views during the last of the foliage. Starting at the AMC’s Cardigan Lodge, we'll be hiking up the Holt/Manning Trails. Take the Holt Trail to “Grand Junction” above the wooden bridge, then take the Holt-Clark Cutoff Trail through the Cathedral Forest (now mostly blown-down) to continue on the Holt Trail. Follow the Holt Trail to the open summit of Mount Cardigan. There is a firetower at the top of Mount Cardigan. To complete the loop, we'll take the Mowglis Trail down off the main summit and north across the semi-open ridge to the peak of Firescrew. Descend and return via the Manning Trail back to the trailhead.

Total distance of hike: 5 miles
Elevation gain: 1,900 ft.
Difficulty: 2/10. Great introduction to hiking. Some steepness here and there but not over long periods and the climb overall is short. Lots of rocks and roots on the tral. Rock slabs near the summit may be slippery when wet. This is also the steepest part of the hike but isn't too bad.
What to bring for hiking:
Waterproof hiking boots
Water-resistant or waterproof pants
Non-cotton layers
Hat
Headlamp
2-3 liters of water
Snacks and lunch. You will be burning a lot of energy!

Only sign up for this hike if you're interested. Cancelling last minute or not showing up on the day of the hike without a valid reason is unacceptable (both carpoolers and non-carpoolers). By doing that, you're preventing someone else who wanted to join the trip to be able to go and can also lead to the cancellation of the entire trip. If you flake frequently without a valid reason (eg. unforeseen conflict), it will impact your ability to join future trips organized by me. You'll be responsible for any campground fees if you do cancel within 2 weeks of this trip unless you find someone to replace your spot.
