Inspired by fungal formations, Miyoung So: Yet To Be Seen features delicately detailed sculptural works constructed from hand-made cold porcelain and recycled materials. The artist muses, “As I traversed old wooden bridges, walked down roads lined with trees, and passed by my neighbors' houses, I noticed something ubiquitous: lichens, fungi, slime mold, and moss.” So began to observe these small yet fascinating organisms closely, adjusting the zoom on her phone camera to capture their minute details. The microworld proved to be a wellspring of inspiration for her work. Intrigued by fungi’s systemic lifestyle of symbiosis and their ability to connect ecosystems, So aims to capture their morphological beauty and frame it within their history and way of life. She seeks to embody the complex forms and myriad colors in her sculpture, testing and creating several materials by hand. So concludes, “Through my art, I hope to preserve the reverence I hold for these systems and inspire others to appreciate the beauty of the microworld.”
Miyoung So is an artist and sculptor based in Newton, Massachusetts. After attending art school from grade seven to twelve, So earned a Bachelor's degree in sculpture from Seoul National University in 1990. Her work was showcased in three group exhibitions over the next two years before taking a 25-year hiatus to teach art. She began developing her recent body of work four years ago.
