Sarasa’s concluding concert set of the season, “Mirrors,” will illuminate new perspectives on Johannes Brahms through two important musical role models from the Baroque and early classical eras, François Couperin and Franz Joseph Haydn. 2018 also celebrates the 350th anniversary of the birth of the highly influential French Baroque organist, harpsichordist and composer François Couperin (1688-1733). Considered a “poet-musician par excellence,” he not only inspired important composers during his lifetime (most notably Johann Sebastian Bach), but also many decades after his death the likes of Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel and especially Johannes Brahms. Brahms performed Couperin’s keyboard music frequently in recital, and helped complete the Chrysander edition of the French composer’s Pièces de clavecin in the 1880s.

Sarasa is excited to present Couperin’s Trio Sonata “La Piémontaise” from Les Nations, Haydn’s youthful String Quartet in F major, Op. 17, No. 2, Couperin’s kaleidoscopic “Les Barricades mystérieuses” for solo harpsichord, and the beloved Brahms String Sextet in B-flat major, Op. 18.

Don’t miss the rare opportunity to hear these great works showcased together, and to discover what an enticing relevance exists and mirrors between them.

With Haldan Martinson and Christina Day Martinson, violins; Jenny Stirling and Marka Gustavsson, violas; Timothy Merton and Jennifer Morsches, cellos; and Rip Jackson, harpsichord.
