Memorial Day Garden of Flags: 37,000+ flags on Boston Common

UPDATE: The Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund is asking for volunteers to help dismantle the flag garden on Wed May 29 at 12pm.

"With steady rains predicted for the next couple of days, the dismantling of the flag garden on Boston Common will be delayed until Wednesday May 29, prompting organizers to ask for the public’s help in pulling the more than 37,000 flags over their lunch hour. Volunteers are asked to meet at the display on the Common, immediately adjacent to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument near Charles and Beacon Street, at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday."

Our signature community building event! Since 2010, we and hundreds of volunteers have created a majestic garden of flags on Boston Common for Memorial Day weekend. Each of the 37,000+ flags we plant every year at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument represents every brave Massachusetts service member who gave his or her life defending our country since the Revolutionary War. The completed garden is a breathtaking tribute to the true meaning of Memorial Day and a powerful message of community support to the families of these fallen heroes that their sacrifices will never be forgotten. 

HOW CAN YOU HELP? You can:

• Help us plant flags on Wednesday, May 22nd. To sign up as an individual volunteer, please use this link. 
• Attend our name reading ceremony on Thursday, May 23rd at 10:30am. During this ceremony, families of the Massachusetts fallen since 9/11/2001 will read the names of their loved ones in front of the flag display in Boston Common. By standing with us during this ceremony, you will let these families know that their loved ones’ ultimate sacrifice is honored and will never be forgotten.
• Sign up for a shift to watch the flags over the weekend. Shifts are in 2-hour increments and will occur from Thursday, 5/23 at 12:00pm until Monday, 5/27 at 5:30pm. Volunteers watching the flags will be assigned in teams and will also be trained on how to educate the community about the display.
• Help us retire the Flag Garden beginning at 5:30pm, May 27th.
