Hudson resident flutist and music educator Alex Andrews will appear as soloist with the Lincoln-Sudbury Civic Orchestra as it continues its 47th season on Sunday January 12, under the leadership of its gifted new conductor Luca Antonucci. The program is a special format that showcases the sections and soloists of the orchestra. The concert begins at 3:30 PM.
Conductor Antonucci brought the concept to the orchestra: "Our family-friendly program features selections with the entire orchestra, as well as each instrument family playing on its own. It has been great fun working on this music with the orchestra, and a great opportunity to explore repertoire which we otherwise would not have the chance to perform, including Mozart's famous "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and Gounod's charming "Petite Symphonie."
"Meet the Orchestra" opens with the full orchestra in the immensely familiar and popular Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's blockbuster opera.
The trumpets and trombones of brass section perform Giovanni Gabrieli's Canzon Septimi Toni #2, for a double brass quartet. The antiphonal music by Gabrieli for unspecified instrumentation is most suited for the glorious sound of the LSCO brass.
The LSCO wind sections present Charles Gounod's Petite Symphonie. The was a departure from his regular fare of opera, vocal and religious music. Commissioned by a wind ensemble in Paris in 1885, it is a nonet scored for flute, and pairs of oboes, clarinet, horns, and bassoons.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, another best-loved work by Mozart features the LSCO violins, violas, cellos, and basses. Conducted by Antonucci, the string sections were expertly prepared in rehearsal by concertmaster Diane Hartung of Framingham.
Hudson-based music educator and long-time LSCO principal flutist Alex Andrews is soloist for the Mozart Andante for Flute and Orchestra. She studied flute at Colby College and was a member of the Colby Symphony Orchestra.
