The MBTA announced this morning that a gondola system is coming to Boston by 2030 🚠🎉


Boston, MA – April 1, 2024 – The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is thrilled to unveil an innovative addition to Boston’s public transit landscape: a cutting-edge gondola system set to revolutionize travel across the city by 2030. In an unprecedented move to enhance urban mobility, this aerial transportation network will offer a seamless and scenic alternative to traditional underground transit routes.


Acknowledging the challenges in further underground expansion, the MBTA is taking to the skies. The new gondola system promises to bridge the gap between all existing MBTA lines - Silver, Green, Orange, Blue, and Red - by providing a swift, above-ground transit solution. This state-of-the-art system is designed to match the average speeds of current MBTA services, reaching up to 20 mph, thus ensuring efficiency without compromising on the panoramic views of the Charles River and Boston Harbor.


The decision to introduce gondolas as a viable transport option stems from the realization that underground improvements face significant physical and financial constraints.
