Max Raabe & Palast Orchester will perform on March 19 at Symphony Hall. One day earlier, we welcome Ian Wekwerth, Piano player of the Palast Orchester since 1986, to the Goethe-Institut to play some of the iconic tunes of the 1920s and 30s and discuss the role music played in the Weimar Era.

Revues, cabarets, dances, movies and the distribution via radio and records turned music into mass entertainment and distraction from hard times.

But golden days for composers, lyricists and musicians! The scene was dominated by Jewish artists like Friedrich Holländer, Walter Jurmann or Werner-Richard Heymann – whose promising careers were forced to a halt after 1933.

Since over 30 years the names of those who the Nazis intended to be made forgotten have been kept alive by Max Raabe & Palast Orchester, a 13-piece band from Berlin touring internationally with a repertoire of Weimar Era music.

Ian presents songs from the orchestra´s concert program, puts them into their historical context and gives background information about the destinies of the composers and lyricists.
