Join us for a hands-on workshop on woodblock printing, the process used by LaToya M. Hobbs for her monumental suite of prints Carving Out Time, on display in the special exhibition LaToya M. Hobbs: It’s Time (March 1–July 21, 2024). We will start with a close look at Hobbs’s prints with exhibition curator Elizabeth M. Rudy, the Carl A. Weyerhaeuser Curator of Prints, and watch a video of the artist at work to gain a better understanding of the woodcut technique. Then in the Materials Lab, artist Deighton Abrams will teach you how to carve your own design and print it by hand.
We invite you to leave behind your carved woodblock so that it can be part of an exciting art project here at the museums! Each block contains a simple element of a larger image that will be revealed during a special Harvard Art Museums at Night event, on June 27. Artist collaborative BIG INK, who printed Carving Out Time with Hobbs, will be on site with their large, mobile press to assemble all the woodblocks created during workshop sessions and print them as a monumental communal artwork!
The hands-on session will take place in the Materials Lab on the Lower Level.
$15 materials fee. Registration is required and space is limited; registration will open on this form, beginning on Sunday, March 3, at 10am. Materials fee must be paid to confirm registration. Please email [email protected] or call 617-495-1440 to join the waitlist. Minimum age of 14; no previous experience required.
