Massmouth is a non-profit organization that promotes the timeless art of storytelling in Massachusetts. Since our founding, Massmouth, Inc. has changed the way Greater Boston and the surrounding communities tell and listen to stories.
Supported by a group of local storytellers, founders Norah Dooley and Andrea Lovett incorporated Massmouth, Inc. in 2009 as a 501c3 and started the Greater Boston story slam series. Since then, thousands of storytellers and listeners from all over the state have participated in Massmouth programming and helped to promote storytelling at traditional and non-traditional venues.
What is a Story Slam?
A story slam is a contest of stories by known and undiscovered talent. Story slammers sign up on the night to tell a 5-minute short story on the evening’s theme. Ten names are drawn at random from a box. A team of 5 volunteer judges – interested amateurs, storytellers, theater people and members of the audience who love stories – evaluate how well each story is told, how well it is constructed, how well the story explores, connects and/or reveals some truth about the theme, and how well it honors the time limit. The top-scorer is awarded a prize and this winner, the runner-up and the audience-selected favorite all earn an opportunity to compete to perform at the “BigMouthOff” at the end of the slam season in the spring.
