Artists and thought leaders will share reflections on themes of justice, equity, art, and empowerment, and invite participation in free activities throughout the day. This family-friendly event features music by Little Uprisings, and For Freedoms Town Hall with MLK Memorial artists Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Anderson, and Erin Genia.
Sign-Making | 11:00 am – 4 pm
Bertucci Education Studio
Create a sign that shares a message of what freedom, empowerment, and justice mean to you and the change you’d like to see in society. Prompts and materials will be provided.
Reread and Reclaim MLK: A Musical Story Hour | 11:30 am and 3:00 pm
Living Room
Listen to stories and participate in conversation with artist and educator Tanya Nixon-Silberg of Little Uprisings and musician Tony Leva on bass, as they speak about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, his dreams of peace and justice, and the role kids can play as advocates for change.
For Freedoms Town Hall | 2:00 pm
Calderwood Hall
Artists and thought leaders Hank Willis Thomas, Eric M. Anderson, Erin Genia, and others will explore themes of love and compassion in a conversation moderated by Yng-Ru Chen of Praise Shadows Art Gallery and organized in collaboration with For Freedoms.
This Town Hall takes inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, the Gardner's Titus Kaphar: The Jerome Project exhibition, and The Embrace by Hank Willis Thomas, the first memorial to honor Dr. King and Coretta Scott King on Boston Common. Together, speakers will respond to questions related to art, memory, civic engagement, and justice.
