Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated to honor deceased loved ones. The veil between the living and the dead is lifted and the departed loved ones are invited to visit. Beautifully decorated sugar skulls are often used as decorations on graves and altars during Dia de los Muertos. Traditionally, sugar skulls are small skulls made from sugar, decorated and placed on altars as offerings to the deceased or given amongst friends. They represent the sadness of death and the sweetness of life. Skulls are also said to represent rebirth into the next stage of life.
