Margaret Swan’s Lift, features a new body of work exploring forces of nature in relation to structures that harness their power. Inspired by the rigging of sailing vessels, Swan’s large wall-mounted and freestanding sculptures position the taut interplay of linear elements in contrast to curving planes in space, suggesting the presence of wind animating the work.
The constructed aluminum surfaces are painted and roughly sanded creating linear patterns following the contour of the curving sheets. After sanding, the scratched surfaces are stained with a contrasting pigment, generating luminous variations of color over the patterned texture of the variously exposed and coated aluminum. The expansive painterly quality of the curving planes complements the geometric configuration of supporting linear elements to create dynamic, yet interconnected, opposites.
