Margaret Swan’s solo exhibition Flow investigates the duality of free-flowing forms versus structures of containment, choreographing an elegant dance between the two. The fluid, curving planes of her polychrome aluminum sculpture suggest movement, while contrasting latticed frameworks create tension and a sense of restraint. The final effect is that of water passing through nets or vessels— triumphantly finding its own way.
After painting the constructed aluminum surfaces, Swan roughly sands them, creating patterns that follow the contours of the curved sheets. The resulting textured surfaces are then stained with contrasting pigment, generating luminous fluctuations of color over the the variously exposed and coated aluminum. The expansive painterly quality of curved planes within the network of supporting linear elements animates a dynamic and symbiotic relationship of opposites.
Awarded a New England Foundation for the Arts Regional Fellowship in Sculpture, a Massachusetts Artist Fellowship in Sculpture, and other grants throughout her career, Swan is a graduate of Bennington College and Syracuse University. Her sculpture has been featured in museum exhibitions throughout
New England, including the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA.
Margaret Swan: Flow runs concurrently with Donna Dodson: Sheroes with special guests Maya Rubio and Kledia Spiro.
