On Juneteenth we will honor the history, legacy, and culture of our African American and Black community members with a morning flag raising ceremony, a speech by Ferryway Principal Abdel Sepulveda, and performances by local artists, including poet Terry Carter and singer Martinez McNeil. Mayor Gary Christenson will also read a proclamation declaring the day ‘Juneteenth Freedom Day’ in Malden. Join us in commemorating Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration of the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were to be freed. Massachusetts became the 25th state to recognize Juneteenth Freedom Day as a holiday in 2007.
Everyone is welcome to this free, virtual event. If you have questions please ask them in this event or write us at [email protected].
Please note that MaldenCORE will not host an evening Juneteenth Freedom Celebration with activities, food, and performances this year. It is not currently safe for us to gather in-person for large events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. MaldenCORE members decided to host a single virtual event, combining the flag raising and some artistic performances into one educational and celebratory event. We look forward to hosting the 4th Annual Malden Juneteenth Freedom celebration with both a morning flag raising ceremony and an evening community celebration in 2021.
