The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many of us to reexamine our relationship with food: how we access it, make it last, and share it with our neighbors.
This September, Lovin’ Spoonfuls has launched a five-week campaign aimed at elevating the conversation about wasted food and inspiring action on the issue to #StrikeFoodWaste.
Below are two, fun, family-friendly opportunities to get involved right now.
Lovin' Pantry Challenge:
Did you know that households contribute between 40-50% of all food wasted in the United States? We buy more than we're prepared to eat. It expires (or we think it has) and then we throw it out. We challenge you to make a creative meal of what you have in your fridge or pantry right now - before it goes to waste. Take a picture of it (or take a picture of yourself or your family eating what you've made) and share it on social. Tag Lovin' Spoonfuls (@lovinspoonfuls on Facebook and Instagram and @lovinfoodrescue on Twitter). Use #StrikeFoodWaste. We might feature your meal masterpiece on our social sites!
The #StrikeFoodWaste (Virtual) Art Show:
Calling all young (and young at heart) creatives to picture what happens when food is rescued rather than wasted! We organized this activity with parents, teachers, counselors, youth leaders and kids and teens themselves in mind. Full details at http://bit.ly/StrikeFoodWasteArtShow. Prizes for the three young people whose art we'll feature as upcoming cover photos on our social media.
Families, teachers, and youth leaders: Download our #StrikeFoodWaste Primer now (http://bit.ly/StrikeFoodWastePrimer) for even more ways to involve kids and teens in efforts to curb wasted food and support food rescue!
And, for everyone: Be sure to stay tuned to Spoonfuls' social media this month for information-sharing and calls to action to #StrikeFoodWaste!
About Lovin’ Spoonfuls
Established in 2010 by Ashley Stanley, Lovin’ Spoonfuls is a nonprofit food rescue organization based in Boston dedicated to facilitating the rescue and distribution of healthy, fresh food that would otherwise be discarded.
Each week day, Spoonfuls’ 12 Food Rescue Coordinators work with over 200 vendor partners across eight truck routes to pick up wholesome, perishable food from grocery stores, produce wholesalers, farms and farmers markets, and distribute it to more than 160 community nonprofits that address food insecurity in Greater Boston, MetroWest and Western Massachusetts. Communities served include: Boston, Cambridge, Brighton, Somerville, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Melrose, Watertown, Woburn, Wakefield, Burlington, Newton, Quincy, Needham, Natick, Framingham, Ashland, Bellingham, Milford, Waltham, Sudbury, Southborough and Hampden County (Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke). Each week, Lovin’ Spoonfuls rescues roughly 75,000 pounds of food to serve about 30,000 people within these communities; more than 17 million pounds have been rescued to date.
