For more than half a century, Edward "Dad" Liberty and his three sons held a near-monopoly on the Boston tattoo scene from their shops in Scollay Square, the city’s gritty entertainment district. Over the course of their lifetimes, they accumulated an unmatched collection of hand-painted tattoo “flash” art, vernacular photographs, colorful shop signs, and graphic ephemera. This evocative, sometimes eye-popping material provides the backdrop for a groundbreaking visual and narrative history of tattooing in Boston from the early 1900s through 1962, when Massachusetts banned tattooing statewide.
Historic New England invites you to join Derin Bray and Margaret Hodges, authors of "Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors: The Liberty Boys and The History of Tattooing in Boston," for this program.
Tickets are free; donations are encouraged.
