Belmont World Film and World Education co-present LIYANA, a docudrama about Swaziland directed by the husband and wife team of Aaron and Amanda Kopp, on Wednesday, October 2, at 7:30 PM at the West Newton Cinema. Following the screening Aaron Kopp will be part of a panel discussion moderated by WBUR Field Producer Shannon Dooling that also includes World Education's Samukeliso Busika and Gill Garb, who both work on the ground in Swaziland. The evening is sponsored by WBUR-FM.
Executive produced by Emmy-winner Thandie Newton and produced by Oscar-winner Daniel Junge (the documentary SAVING FACE), LIYANA represents the Kopps’s directorial debut, for which they received a MacArthur Foundation grant. The genre-defying docudrama portrays the lives of five children in the Kingdom of Swaziland, who turn their past trauma into an original fable about a girl named Liyana. It weaves the stories of these orphaned children’s lives with animated sequences about Liyana, who embarks on a perilous quest to save her young twin brothers. The film’s unique format fashions an inspiring tale of perseverance and hope.
Tickets are $11 general admission and $9 for students and seniors in advance at www.belmontworldfilm.org; $12 and $10, respectively, on day of show beginning at 7:00 PM. EBT cardholder tickets are half price at the door with cash.
