"There is in this world no such force as the force of a person determined to rise. These human souls cannot be permanently chained." ~ W.E.B. DuBois
Thousands of people across the country have risen up against police terror and white supremacy. Now, many people are asking what's next? Is it really possible to eradicate police brutality when the racist US government is so powerful? We say yes, all empires fall!
Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that the end of chattel slavery was announced in Texas, the last Confederate state that was clinging onto the slave system after the Civil War. After 250 years of struggle, the system that allowed Africans to be owned as another person's property was abolished. Chattel slavery, along with the theft of Indigenous lands, was the main reason that the wealth of the United States and Western Europe grew so rapidly. Many defenders of the system said that chattel slavery was "natural," that it had always existed and always would exist.
On June 19, from 6-7pm, join us for a livestream commemoration of Juneteenth as we apply lessons from the movement to abolish slavery to the movement for Black liberation today.
