The Choreography of CRISPR, a dance embodying and illuminating CRISPR DNA editing, was commissioned by the MIT Museum as a film in 2022.


In collaboration with choreographer Gabrielle Lamb, join us for a live performance of the piece by New York City-based company Pigeonwing Dance.


Inspired by the dramatic vocabulary used to describe CRISPR--twisting, cutting, inserting, copying, repeating, palindromes, and cluster--The Choreography of CRISPR is an intricate dance of spiraling and folding patterns. The performance is structured in three parts: the spatial structure of DNA, the introduction of new information into the genome, and the subsequent integration of that information. The music is an original composition by electro-acoustic composer James Budinich, scored for guitar, viola, and electronics.


In conjunction with the performance, Lamb will discuss and demonstrate her creative process, its intersections with the sciences, and the importance of improvisation prompts in generating choreography.


We also invite you to explore the science of CRISPR through a hands-on, interactive demo that connects CRISPR’s origins to applications in genomic medicine, improved nutrition, and climate resilience.
