An Afro-indigenous, queer feminist born in Colombia and based in Toronto, Lido Pimienta creates an ecstatic musical hybrid of electronic music and cumbia. Simultaneously defiant and delicate, her soprano voice anchors swirling basslines and strings in confrontational songs about love, politics, inequality, and racism. She’s touring in support of her newest recording, Miss Colombia, “a new collection of splashy, spangly songs about tangled identity, queer love and the complicated relationship she’s maintained with the country of her birth.”—NPR
Combo Chimbita, first-generation New Yorkers with Colombian backgrounds, use cumbia as a building block for their psychedelic, punk-laden "tropical futurism," an inventive combination of rhythms and sounds from Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
