Leonora Carrington: Dream Weaver, the artist’s first-ever museum exhibition in New England, brings together over thirty works of art, some rarely seen, that span over six decades of Carrington’s prolific art-making career. Born into an Anglo-Irish family, Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) strove to free herself from the gendered strictures imposed on her by society. Her rebellious spirit found refuge in art and literature, leading her to join the Surrealist movement in Europe and, later, immigrate to Mexico, where she developed her visionary art.
The show explores Carrington’s creative and technical versatility, working in a variety of mediums, such as tempera, gouache, acrylic, oil, pencil, pen, and fiber, while offering riveting insight into her artistic process of conjuring fantastical worlds rich in magic and symbolism. Leonora Carrington: Dream Weaver reveals the complexities of an artist whose compositions—inspired by biography, folklore, mysticism, religion, and the occult—reflect the unbridled imagination of a woman on a profound journey to unravel the world’s mysteries.
